AI
PROGRAM
| In
my pursuit to develop a deer that meets the criteria my
customers demand, I’ve found artificial insemination to
be very advantageous. There is an overwhelming number of
great bucks available and selecting those that will
complement my herd requires attention. I learned fast in
this business not to just look at antlers, but to give
first consideration to the composition of the buck.
“Look below the antlers”. I prefer a buck that offers a
high probability that their offspring will be capable
to live here in South Louisiana, offer disease
resistance and an antler structure that scores high, yet
still look’s like a whitetail. “To know where they’re
going, we must know where they’ve been”. This is another
area of my operation that I take under advisement.
Considering the
expense and all the many “links in the chain” that must
be addressed for a successful AI program, a wise farmer
would not “cut short” in any area that could attribute
to failure. There is no room for error in proper sire
selection, insemination, and semen collection.
Successful history, experience and knowledge is key.

Dr Ray Favero is
the key to my AI program. A fellow deer farmer with over
sixteen years experience providing reproduction
services across the US., Canada, Mexico, Asia and New
Zealand, I remain confident that he is among the best
available to me. Equipped with one of the only mobile
labs in the country he can collect, process and freeze
semen right on the farm. Most of his clients are among
the premier whitetail, mule deer and elk breeders in
the nation and for ten months a year he provides these
services. Collecting and inseminating at these
operations gives him a first hand opportunity to see
“what’s out there, and how well it is performing“. As a
pioneer in many research projects such as deer embryo
transplants, along with his many years of experience,
Dr. Favero is without a doubt a leading authority
providing genetic consultation, reproduction services,
nutritional and deer health advice. He has represented
our industry in Washington and shares his vast knowledge
to others via workshops and seminars. If given the
opportunity to visit with him I strongly suggest you do
so. |

Every year Dr. Favero
collects semen here on the farm and inseminates some of
my does. I breed AI to some of my own bucks as well as
others that we feel will enhance our program in a
positive direction. I also “lease” many does and Dr.
Favero will AI them to the buck of the customers choice.
The doe never leaves my farm. They are bred AI and later
placed with a cover buck (customers choice). The fawns
are born here, tagged, micro chipped and tended to until
ready for delivery at weaning.
Semen is available
from many of my bucks, collected by Dr Favero. He also
has access to a vast selection of premier bucks
throughout the country. Dr. Favero and I are excited
about a few young bucks that we own together and are
looking forward to offering semen from these “once
they’ve proven themselves".
